I have mounted 3x160w Poly's on the roof of my bus, connected in parallel to a 60a mppt charge controller ' sun shield pro solar' feeding 3x100ah lead acid batteries, The distance between the panels and the charge controller is less than 15 feet using 10AWG from panels to controller and 4AWG from.
Night before last, there was no load on the cc (not even the inverter) and all was fully charged upon going to bed. (77ah stored and 100% battery). In the morning the cc showed 0 AH. Last night, again, no load (except for the inverter). From 10:30pm until around 5am , the reading was consistent.
As soon as the current coming from the panels dropped at 8pm, the battery discharged down to 10.8v in under 90 minutes, with no load. Is it possible that my inverter is still drawing a load, even while off? Is the charge controller not working properly and dumping charge back to the panels? How do.
Voltages in the table are for a battery the has no load and is not being charged and has rested for a while since charge or load. Voltages in the rest of the answer are general values for AGM and my differ from you setup. Normal fully charged voltage of AGM is around 12.7V, as shown in the table.
There are several common reasons why a solar panel drains a battery. Let’s go through the issues and how to easily solve the problem. 1. No Solar Charge Controller A solar charge controller is a vital part in managing the electricity in your between your solar panel and your battery. Although it is.
Battery discharge can occur even when there is no demand. This typically happens when the battery is idle, meaning it is still connected to the load, but there is no current being drawn from it. The voltage of a lead-acid battery when idle (not supplying current or being charged) will vary.

6 FAQs about [Solar battery discharging with no load]
What happens if you put non-rechargeable batteries on solar lights?
When you put non-rechargeable batteries on your solar lights, the light will try to recharge the batteries. Although non-rechargeable batteries can handle a small degree of recharge, prolonged recharge will cause them to explode. The explosion of the battery may ruin your solar lights or leave you with a lot of mess to clean up.
Why does my solar panel feed on my battery instead of charging?
For example, your panel deciding to feed on your battery instead of charging it. So why does this happen and what is the fix? A good solar panel won’t drain your battery; even during nighttime. If it happens the main reason is that its blocking or bypass diodes are broken and need replacement.
Can a solar panel drain a battery at night?
A good solar panel won’t drain your battery; even during nighttime. If it happens the main reason is that its blocking or bypass diodes are broken and need replacement. Even then if you have a Solar Charge Controller it’ll prevent battery drainage. Usually, most people’s solar panels drain during the night.
Do solar panels discharge at night?
The answer is yes. Solar panels will discharge at night if your solar panel doesn’t have a diode or it is broken. In fact not only does it happen at night, but it also happens when the panel doesn’t get sunlight. Why you may ask. Well at night your Panel Voltage becomes 0.
What should I do if my solar charge controller is not working?
Aside from Diodes, there are also many things you need to be careful about; such as Solar Charge Controller, Battery Maintenance, etc. So here are some more tips regarding fixing these issues: Restart the Charge Controller. As with many electronics a soft or hard reset can fix many problems. So try that and it might help. Check your wiring.
Does a solar charge controller prevent battery drainage?
Even then if you have a Solar Charge Controller it’ll prevent battery drainage. Usually, most people’s solar panels drain during the night. Due to this most of the time, people think solar charge controllers or inverters are somehow the culprits too. The funny thing is Solar Charge controllers actually prevent battery drainage.
